HISTORY OF BASKETBALL
History of Basketball in the World
The game of basketball was first introduced by a Canadian sports teacher, Dr. James Naismith, in December 1891. This sport was discovered by Naismith while teaching at the Young Men's Christian Association (YCMA) college, in Springfield, Massachusetts, United States. Naismith was initially looking for alternative sports that could be played indoors during the winter. Initially, this game was played by 9 people in each team because sports lessons were filled with 118 people. Naismith then wrote some basic rules, stuck a basket on the wall of the sports hall, and asked students to start playing the game he created. In addition, originally the basketball hoop used a peach basket so that a ladder was needed to retrieve the ball in the event of a goal. The first official game was played at the YMCA gymnasium in Albany, New York, on January 20, 1892, with nine players. Over time, the peach basket was replaced with a metal circle (ring) in 1906. Frank Mahan, one of the first players of the game, approached Naismith, in early 1892, with the intention of asking Naismith the name of his new game creation. Initially Naismith gave this sport according to with its name, Naismith Ball, but after being given suggestions by Mahan, this sport was later renamed basketball (basketball). Then on June 18, 1932 the world's main sport of basketball, Federation Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) was formed. In 1936, basketball became an official sport that was contested at the Olympics. From there, the development of basketball grew rapidly. On June 6, 1946, the National Basketball Association, also known as the NBA, was formed and made the game of basketball increasingly known in various regions of the world. Over time, basketball also updated the rules to make the game more interesting. Basketball also has a big event, namely the Basketball World Cup. or also known as the FIBA Basketball World Cup. This event has been going on since 1950.
History of Basketball in Indonesian
The history of the introduction and development of basketball in Indonesia cannot be separated from the spread of this sport from the United States, the origin of basketball, to East Asian countries according to the geopolitical conditions at that time. China is one of the targets for the development of basketball by the YMCA. Bob Baily was sent to Tientsien (1894) to introduce this new sport. Since then, China started playing this sport. Apart from China, other Asian countries that were touched by the game of basketball for the first time were Japan (1900) and the Philippines (1900).
How did basketball get to Indonesian ?
In the 1920, waves of nomads from China entered Indonesia. They also brought the game of basketball that had been developed there for two decades. The nomads formed their own community, including establishing a Chinese school. As a result, basketball quickly developed in Chinese schools. In those Chinese schools, basketball became one of the mandatory sports that every student had to play. No wonder every school has a basketball court. It is also not surprising that the basketball players who stand out in their appearance come from this circle. In the 1930s basketball associations began to form. Big cities such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta and Medan; central to the founding of this basketball association. In Semarang for example. In 1930 there were already associations such as the Chinese English School, Tionghwa Hwee, Fe Leon Ti Yu Hui, and Pheng Yu Hui (Friends). Sahabat is a club from Sony Hendrawan (Liem Tjien Sion), one of Indonesia's basketball legends. After the Proclamation of Independence, August 17, 1945, the sport of basketball began to be widely known in cities which became the basis of the struggle, such as Yogyakarta and Solo. At PON (National Sports Week) I (1948) in Solo, basketball was played for the first time at the national level. PON I participants are still limited to the strongest men from each 'Karesidenan', as well as associations with native players such as PORI Solo, PORI Yogyakarta, and the Sarangan Sports Academy. However, it must be admitted that in terms of game technique, the ability of Residency teams consisting of Chinese players was much higher than native players. In 1951 when the PON II was held, basketball was played for men and women. The team that was sent no longer represented the Residency but had represented the Province. Teams from East Java, DKI Jakarta, West Java, and North Sumatra are the leading forces on the PON stage. In 1951, Maladi -one of the national sports figures- asked Tony Wen and Wim Latumeten to form a basketball organization in Indonesia. Maladi's position at that time was secretary of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI). On the initiative of the two figures, on October 23, 1951 an organization was formed with the name "All Indonesia Basketball Association". In 1955, the name was refined according to the rules of the Indonesian language. The name is "Basketball Association of all Indonesia" abbreviated as Perbasi. Perbasi's first management was Tony Wen as chairman and Wim Latumeten as secretary. Don't Want to Join With the formation of Perbasi, has the development of Indonesian basketball increased rapidly? Apparently not. The first challenge came from the Chinese association who were not willing to join because they already had their own association. To solve this problem, in 1955 Perbasi held a Basketball Conference in Bandung. The conference was attended by delegates from Yogyakarta, Semarang, Jakarta and Bandung. The most important decision of this Conference was that Perbasi is the only basketball parent organization in Indonesia. Terms for Chinese basketball associations are no longer recognized. This conference also prepared the first Perbasi Congress. Perbasi was accepted as a member of FIBA in 1953. A year later, 1954, Indonesia sent its first basketball team to the Manila Asian Games.
